The
Sounds of Feng Shui This is the 4th installment in our series of articles about common feng shui objects and how to use them. If you missed the previous articles in this series, you can read them here.
Bells and wind chimes are two common kinds of feng shui cures that use sound vibrations to achieve specific effects. Bells are most often used in feng shui where there is a need for some kind of warning or protection. If you are unable to put your desk in the command position for example, you can hang a small brass bell on your office door to alert you when someone enters. This application can also be used in the bedroom. You can also hang a bell wherever you would like to energize or enhance the space, or to attract chi to an area of the home that is distant from the front door. For example, if you work at home and your office is at the rear of the house, and you cannot see the office door from the front door, hang a bell beside the office door to symbolically "call" chi to the office. This will assist in assuring a steady flow of new customers and clients to your office. Many rituals, religious services, ceremonies and meditation practices begin and end with the ringing of a bell. The sound of the bell penetrates the space, calls us to turn our attention to Spirit, and signals a shift in the energy of not only of the space itself but of everyone in it. Bells are also a powerful tool used in space clearing rituals, which rely on the sound vibrations to help shake loose stuck energy and purify the space. If you have a stubborn accumulation of clutter in a specific area of your home, try ringing a bell over it at least once a day for several days or longer. This loosens up the dense energy associated with clutter and on a subtle level makes it easier for you to make decisions and physically relocate the stuff. A bell used for ceremonial purposes such as meditation, blessing, or space clearing should be treated as a sacred object and kept in a special place. Wind chimes can be used for many of the same purposes as bells, and are especially good for activating and attracting chi. The sound waves created by a wind chime will also slow down and help disperse chi that is moving too quickly. If the path from the street to your front door is long and straight, hang a wind chime by the door or porch steps to slow the chi down so it enters your home gently. And if your front door is significantly higher or lower than street level, a wind chime will help to guide chi to your home. Wind chimes are also good for lifting the energy of a space. If one corner of your yard is lower than the others, chi may settle there. Hanging a wind chime from a tree in that corner can stir the chi up and keep it moving. Wind chimes come in many sizes, from tinkly little tiny ones to great big resonant ones. Match the size of the wind chime to the size of your space. A large brass wind chime might be overwhelming indoors, while a very small chime may not be strong enough to have much effect. It is generally best to choose metal chimes, as they have the most penetrating tone. However, metal does "chop down" the wood element associated with the Jen (Family) and Hsun (Wealth) guas; if you wish to use a chime in those areas, use a bamboo chime instead or add something to represent the water element to reduce the impact of metal and nourish wood. Whether you are using bells or wind chimes to adjust the chi of your home, the most important consideration is that the sound of the bell or chime should be pleasing to you.. For either cure, the quality of the sound is more important than the design.
Feng
Shui Q+A (Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.) Q: I've heard that it is auspicious to have bamboo growing outside the house. Where should I plant it for best luck? A: Bamboo is a highly prized plant in Asia because it is fast-growing, resilient, and useful for so many different purposes. Bamboo can be made into walls, floors, fences, furniture, woven into baskets, or made into cooking implements and musical instruments, to name just a few uses. The problem with planting bamboo as an enhancement in your garden stems from the same qualities that make it so appreciated as a resource: it grows very quickly, spreads like wildfire, and is tough to get rid of once it is established. Drive along the Hana highway on the north shore of Maui, and you will pass through bamboo forests that have entirely taken over huge tracts of land. It is very beautiful, but all of the native vegetation has been pushed out and nothing else grows there now. The same thing can happen to your garden if you are not careful. If you do choose to plant bamboo, please consult with a landscape designer or experienced gardener. You will need to use a very deep landscape border to keep the bamboo from spreading out beyond the chosen area. The best locations for bamboo are in the front of the house, and in the Family and Wealth guas (associated with the wood element)… so long as you keep in mind that just because bamboo is a good feng shui symbol doesn't mean it's the best choice for your garden. PS: The popular "Lucky Bamboo" usually sold in little porcelain pots for indoor use is not bamboo at all. It is a variety of dracaena that looks like bamboo and grows very well under less-than-ideal conditions. If you want to bring a little bamboo energy into your home, a small pot of "lucky bamboo" on your desk might be a wiser choice than planting the real thing in your garden.
