Feng Shui Thoughts for Spring

by Stephanie Roberts

It's officially spring in the northern hemisphere, the traditional time for a thorough "spring cleaning." If you live in a cool climate, and your house has been closed up against the cold all winter, it's especially important to open all the doors and windows for an hour or so on a nice sunny day to air out the house. This helps get rid of any old, stale energy, and invites new, fresh chi in. As you put your winter clothes and home accessories away and bring out the spring gear, be alert for opportunities to get rid of any items that you don't really need, use, or appreciate any more.

In the last issue, I looked at jen gua (associated with the east and with spring) as the place of new beginnings. It's also the area associated with family and community, so as you get into your spring cleaning take a moment or two to think about these aspects of jen gua as well.

For example, you might hear of a community clean-up day planned at the local park where you take your kids to play. Consider volunteering a few hours of your time to the project, or look for other ways to tidy up or contribute to your neighborhood. This could be something as simple as taking a plastic grocery bag with you on an afternoon walk, so you can pick up whatever trash you come across. Or you might take a vase of daffodils or tulips to an eldercare home or hospice, to bring some spring-time energy into their space. If you've been meaning to get more involved with your community, this would be an excellent time to look for how you can be of service.

It's also possible that you may have over-committed yourself to community activities, and as a result have not been able to spend as much time as you'd like with your family. Feng shui is about bringing your life into better balance, so if what you really need to do is say "no" to any more community involvement, that's okay, too.

The 3-Blessing bracelets for our March give-away, were very popular, bringing in more than the usual number of entries. Congratulations to winners Shelly M. in Oregon and Leslie B. in Illinois! Watch for a new give-away in our next issue.

Feng Shui Q+A

(Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.)

Q: My garage is attached to my home and even with my front door, so it covers three key areas on the left side of the ba gua, including my wealth area. What can I do about this?

A: It is very common in newer American homes for the garage to dominate a large portion of the floor plan. Generally this indicates that your family is "on the go" a lot (certainly true of many American families!), and this is especially true if the garage is prominent at the front of the house.

There isn't a great deal you can "do" with a garage, other than keep it clean and well-organized and de-cluttered. Think about your car as a symbol of your ability to be self-directed and to get where you want to go in life. If your garage is dirty and cluttered, that ability may be compromised or misdirected.

Remember that the ba gua applies to each room in your house, as well as to the home overall. Many people focus so much on the ba gua of the house that they forget they can also work with the ba gua within each room.

In your case, since you are concerned about the garage occupying your wealth area, pay special attention to what's going on in the wealth area within the garage. If you keep garbage or recycling bins in the garage, be sure to place them where they are not in the wealth corner.

Then look at the wealth areas within the main rooms of your house: your living room, kitchen, bedroom, and home office (if you have one). Remove or correct any weakening influences, and add symbols/enhancements to strengthen your wealth chi.

The Rainforest Site

One click will fund the preservation of 11.4 square feet of endangered rainforest. You don't pay a penny. Sponsors will pay for the services your click provides. Isn't that cool?

Originally, 6 million square miles of tropical rainforest existed worldwide. As a result of deforestation, only 2.6 million square miles remain today. The race is on to save our rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they hold. Last year, visitors to The Rainforest Site preserved 344,872,210 square feet of land!

Funding generated by The Rainforest Site goes to pay for rainforest acquisition and management, ensuring the protection of Earth's biological diversity. The amount of land protected depends on the number of visitors to The Rainforest Site. So please click every day, and spread the word to family and friends!
