Nature's
Bounty and Feng Shui Symbols It's mango season here in Hawaii, and we've had just the right combination of winter rain and spring sun over the past few months to create the most bountiful mango crop in years. Taking a bite from a perfect mango fresh from the tree is like eating solid sunshine, and very few things are as gloriously symbolic of abundance as the mangos filling our kitchen, refrigerator, and freezer this time of year. Fruits and grains - whether fresh-picked, crafted from plastic, or depicted in artwork and photographs - are a powerful representation of nature's bounty, and an excellent addition to the "wealth" areas of your home, dining room, and kitchen. No matter what the season, a bowl of fresh fruit brings the positive energy of nature into your home and implies wealth (and health!) for your family. But what about all those feng shui wealth symbols promoted by retailers, such as Lucky Money Frogs, Golden Carp, and Laughing Buddha figurines? Should you use traditional feng shui symbols (for wealth or for any other area you wish to improve), or something more contemporary such as a faceted crystal ball? Or should you create your own cure, based on imagery that has personal meaning for you? There are several points of view on this. One is that an image that has strong personal meaning will be more powerful for you than a symbol from another culture. If you didn't grow up associating Golden Carp with success, for example, or don't know what a Lucky Money Frog represents or why it symbolizes wealth, it won't be an effective feng shui remedy for you. You're better off, according to this theory, cutting out a picture of that sports car you'd love to drive, and placing that in your wealth corner instead. I agree that personal symbols carry a lot of emotional and intentional weight, and that they make excellent feng shui accessories. I don't agree, however, that a lack of Chinese ancestry means you should stay away from the traditional "cures" and symbols. There is another point of view on all this, which is that the long history of use of a particular symbol for a particular purpose endows that symbol with great resonance and power. After all, one of the basic premises of feng shui is that everything is connected on a quantum level. If that's the case, it shouldn't matter whether or not the symbol has cultural significance to you personally. Centuries - or even millennia - of use by others have conferred considerable weight of meaning to that symbol, and it will work for you, too, if you have confidence in it -- even if it's new to you. I happen to believe that both these points of view are valid. I also believe that you shouldn't let someone else dictate which remedies or symbols are best for you. For one person, the most powerful cure may be totally unique and personal, crafted or painted by hand. Someone else might enjoy the feeling of connection to ancient tradition that comes from using a traditional Chinese symbol or object, and may have a higher degree of confidence in its potency than in anything he or she might create. The most powerful symbol for you isn't necessarily the one you choose or create yourself, and it isn't necessarily the one with the longest history of traditional use as a feng shui "cure." The most powerful symbol for you is the one that you feel most positively about, the one that helps you feel most confident that your desired outcome will manifest for you, the one that you most enjoy having in your home. For a few weeks in early June, what I most enjoy having in my home are fresh juicy mangos. I fill several baskets with these gorgeous gifts of abundance, place them in my kitchen and living room, and hardly notice any of the other feng shui enhancements I have put into place over the years. When mango season is over, I'll shift my focus back to the many other ways to bring the energy of plenty into my home.

Shui Q+A (Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.) Q: : "My husband insists on having the
television, music system, dvd player and computer in our bedroom. I
believe this is affecting our love life, and I also feel constantly
drained. Is there any way to reduce the effects of all this equipment,
without removing it from the bedroom?" The bedroom is a place for rest and relaxation, and for enjoying each other's company. The TV and computer distract you from all that; it is like inviting the entire world to come in and live in the bedroom with you, and that's not restful at all! Plus, all of that electronic equipment has a very yang energy that is not appropriate for the bedroom. Depending on the size of your bedroom, and how close all the electronics are to where you sleep, you may also be exposed to harmful EMF pollution as well - a very good reason to move all that stuff elsewhere! You say that your husband insists on having this all in the bedroom, but how firmly have you requested that he reconsider? Have you asked him to share why he feels he needs to have it there? Have you discussed with him the ways in which you feel this is damaging your relationship as well as your personal comfort and well-being? I hope that he is considerate enough of your opinion and needs to listen to you when you say you don't this stuff in the bedroom. If he really does insist, then it is very important to cover all of this up in some way. The best solution would be to place the equipment in a large armoire or cabinet, and to keep the doors closed when the TV or computer is not in use.

Charity One click will fund the preservation of 11.4 square feet of endangered rainforest. You don't pay a penny. Sponsors will pay for the services your click provides. Isn't that cool? Originally, 6 million square miles of tropical rainforest existed worldwide. As a result of deforestation, only 2.6 million square miles remain today. The race is on to save our rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they hold. Funding generated by The Rainforest Site goes to pay for rainforest acquisition and management, ensuring the protection of Earth's biological diversity. The amount of land protected depends on the number of visitors to The Rainforest Site. So please click every day, and spread the word to family and friends!
