The
Feng Shui of Little Things In our last issue, we covered some fun rituals that you can do for Valentine's Day (or any day, if you don't want to wait for next February 14th to come around). Rituals, symbolic meanings, and the use of intention, imagination, and visualization are all powerful aspects of feng shui. But there are lots of "mundane" (ordinary or everyday) cures as well, so in this issue we take a look at the importance of paying attention to little things. The cottage we live in was built about 30 years ago, and I can tell the plumbing fixtures in our bathroom are original to the 1970s by their design. I suspect they were fashionable when installed, but today they appear quite outdated. Worse, their poor design makes the faucet handles hard to grip in order to turn the water off forcefully, which we have needed to do to prevent the faucet from dripping. As you may know, dripping faucets are high on the list of "mundane" feng shui problems. Because moving water represents prosperity and cash flow, plumbing problems are symbolic of financial troubles. Dripping faucets are indicators that money is leaking away. No matter how healthy incoming cash flow may be, if the faucets in your house drip it will be difficult to stay ahead of the bills or to feel that you have achieved financial security. So for us, making sure that faucet was turned firmly off has been a daily concern. When our landlord mentioned that he was redoing the plumbing in the main house, we had the plumber fix the bathroom faucets in our cottage as well. What a difference this small adjustment has made! We still have the old faucets, but now the handles turn easily and smoothly so the design is not a problem, and we don't have to give a thought to whether or not it's going to drip. Sure, if we owned the place I would have replaced them with something more attractive, but as a renter (we're still saving for our dream home) I don't care to go to that expense. And now that the handles are easy to turn, I find I don't mind so much what they look like. I had asked the landlord to make this relatively minor repair because the cash flow implications were on my mind. Now that the change has been made, what I notice most is how powerful getting rid of a little daily irritation is in terms of my own mood and energy. In the grand scheme of things, less-than-wonderful bathroom faucets aren't much to complain about; I have a roof over my head, a home and life I love in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and we are prospering compared to many. But on a subtle level the bathroom faucets annoyed me every day, and now that annoyance is gone I recognize how strong the cumulative effect had become over time. Most of us are busy, overworked, and with far too little time to get everything done. It's easy to let small household maintenance tasks slip by unattended for weeks or even months at a time. On an energetic level, though, little things like doors that stick or squeak, drawers that don't open smoothly, windows that jam, a rickety table leg, or clutter piled up where it gets in our way all make our daily lives just a little but harder. Life for most of us is stressful enough already that we don't need to compound that by ignoring all the little things that get on our nerves. The next time you are feeling tired, stressed, and overwhelmed, look around to see if there are any small repairs or changes you can make in your home that will, in turn, make your daily life flow just a little bit more smoothly. This is the feng shui of little things, and while it may not be as inspiring as painting your bedroom or shopping for a water fountain, it should be part of your overall feng shui strategy. Wishing you freedom from all the "little annoyances" of life, Stephanie

Shui Q+A (Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.) Q: I have just moved into my new office with my desk facing the windows. I like to be able to look out the window when not using my computer. With the desk in this position, I sit with my back to a glass wall with frosted glass on the bottom half of the wall. The door is behind me, also glass frosted on the bottom half. A colleague has said to me that this is not good feng shui: something about I could be stabbed in the back. Doesn't the frosted glass give a solid barrier? Please advise if I can leave my desk as it is, or if I need to move it to have favourable feng shui. A: Your colleague is right. You should not sit with your back to the door if there is any way to avoid it. Symbolically, you are unprotected and unsupported in this position, and are vulnerable to being "stabbed in the back" either by sha chi (negative energy) that might aimed at the door from outside the office, or by colleagues saying negative things about you to others "behind your back." The frosted glass makes no difference whatsoever. The door is still the door, regardless of what material it is made of and whether you keep it open or closed. I understand the pleasure you get from being able to look out the window. However, it would be far better from a feng shui perspective if you could arrange your desk so that you see the doorway while you are seated at the desk. In my own office, the desk is placed sideways to the window (with a commanding view of the door), so the window is always in my peripheral vision and I can lift my eyes from the computer screen and enjoy the lovely view with just a slight turn of my head. You may be able to come up with a similar arrangement in your own office. Or, you may be able to hang a mirror on one of your office walls so that it will reflect the window, so you can enjoy the view without having your back to the door. Featured

Taraka is a very experienced meditator, having maintained a practice of several hours a day for more than two decades; he finds the Holosync CDs oftentimes take him to a deeper level than he reaches on his own. I've spent the past 20 years forgetting to meditate, failing to meditate, and struggling to sit quietly for more than five minutes at a time when I do remember to try; the Centerpointe system helps me sink more quickly into clear mind and quiet heart and to stay there longer. Now I feel I get more out of my meditation sessions (even when I don't use the CDs), enjoy that time more, and remember to make meditation a daily habit. When you listen to these recordings what you hear are the soothing sounds of tropical rainfall, while on a subliminal level deeper tones work to synchronize the left and right sides of your brain and guide you gently into a meditative state. It truly is effortless! You can even record your own affirmations and have them incorporated into customized subliminal recordings that use the patented Holosync technology.
