FENG SHUI TIPS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY
by Stephanie Roberts

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, this is a great time to add romantic symbols to the relationship areas of your home and bedroom. Red hearts, delicious chocolates, adorable cupids, and beautiful flowers - whether received from a loved one or purchased for yourself - are a great way to bring the energy of romance into your life. If you don't have a Valentine this year and wish you did, go ahead and buy a gorgeous card for yourself, and place it in kun gua (the far right corner) of your bedroom as a symbol of your intention to find someone with whom to share romantic love.

Whether you are celebrating a current love this Valentine's Day or hoping to attract a new one, a good place to begin is by focusing on what you like to receive from your partnership. In my book, Fast Feng Shui for Singles, I advise making a collage of everything you want to experience in your next romantic relationship. After all, feng shui is about arranging your space to support your intentions, and you can't intend a perfect relationship unless you are very clear about what your own needs are.

This is just as true when you are romantically involved as it is when you are "looking," so those who are partnered-up might use the inspiration of Valentine's Day to make a collage with your partner of all the ways your relationship nourishes and supports you. If your relationship is fulfilling and balanced, your collage will represent not only what you each get from your involvement, but also what you most enjoy giving to each other and what you most cherish in your partner. If creating a collage is more of a project than you have time for, make a list together of nine things you most appreciate about your relationship. Write on pink paper, or on white paper with a pink or red pen, and keep it in the far right corner of your bedroom until next Valentine's Day or your next anniversary, when you can update or reaffirm it.

For those who are happily single, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to appreciate your independence, friends and family. Think about the experiences and life lessons from past relationships, and how they have helped you find contentment in this stage of life. If you look forward to being in a relationship again when the time is right, pay special attention to appreciating this opportunity to be on your own and to nurture your relationship with your inner self. What special gifts has being single brought you? Are there ways you'd like to take greater advantage of this period of independence?

If Valentine's Day is difficult because you no longer wish to be alone, give some thought to what you have to offer to a relationship, as well as what you'd like to get out of one. Imagine that you have met someone who thinks you are perfect just as you are. Really get into the feeling of being loved by someone who recognizes and appreciates what makes you special. Now, write down what some of those qualities are, such as: your laughter; your love of travel; your generosity and creativity; that you love dogs, or children, or flamenco music, or vintage cars; that you can still wear pink at your age without looking ridiculous; that you are a compassionate listener; that you have two wonderful kids to bring to a new family unit, and so on. Aim for at least nine qualities that you are eager to share in a relationship.

When you feel that you have a good list together, copy it over onto a piece of pink paper (or write on white paper with a pink or red pen), and add this heading at the top: "These are just a few of the many lovable qualities that I, [your name here], am ready to offer to my perfect partner." Roll or fold your list, place it in a small gift box, and tie a white, pink, or red ribbon around it. This gift box symbolizes your intention to share your gifts with a suitable partner who will recognize and cherish them. Place the box either in the far right corner of your bedroom, or on the nightstand on your future partner's side of the bed, and spend a few minutes every day for the next nine days focusing on how wonderful it feels to be in that new relationship.

Happy Valentine's Day to all, and especially to my wonderful partner, Taraka…

Feng Shui Q+A

(Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.)

Q: Can feng shui help me lose weight?

A: I get asked this question from time to time, and the short answer is "not directly." The reason for this is that "weight loss" wasn't much of an issue in ancient China. In fact, for most people, the real problem was getting enough to eat on a regular basis.

Being plump (or even fat) in most pre-industrial cultures was seen as a sign of wealth and an indicator of abundant personal chi. When how well most people ate depended on how good the harvest was that year, being rich meant you could eat as much as you wanted whenever you wanted, and that was considered a good thing. For the typical American today, this is not such a good thing, as our epidemic of obesity proves. Even in modern China, overweight is not a common problem until people switch to a more western lifestyle and diet.

Feng shui does recognize that if the kitchen (especially the refrigerator) is the first thing you see when you enter your home, you may tend to overeat. So if you are in the habit of entering your house through the kitchen, you could try using another entry instead. However, there is no special feng shui weight-loss cure along the lines of "hang a crystal over your dining table and watch the fat melt away" (I wish!!!).

Since losing weight is a simple equation (less food + more exercise = a slimmer you), the key is to look at the factors that make actually doing this so difficult. In other words, what are the stressors and emotional issues that drive unhealthy eating habits, keep us glued to the couch when we know we should be working out, and lead to self-sabotage when we try to stick to a diet? Once those are identified, you can look at how they might relate to the ba gua, and see if there's some way feng shui could help. But it's also possible that you'd get better results just by going to the gym more often, or joining Overeaters Anonymous, or getting counseling for underlying emotional issues. As tempting as it is to hope that feng shui will make weight loss easier, you're still going to have to do the hard work yourself.

I hope to study and write about this topic in more depth someday. Unfortunately, for now, there is no quick feng shui fix for weight issues.
