Keeping Your Feng Shui Up to Date

by Stephanie Roberts

As 2003 draws to a close, many of us are mentally reviewing the progress of the past 12 months and getting ready for the coming new year. This is a good time to review the feng shui cures and enhancements you put into place this year and make any necessary adjustments.

It's helpful to make the distinction between design-driven permanent "cures" and intention-driven changes or enhancements. The difference here is in the purpose and use of an item, not what type of feng shui object is used. Most feng shui objects, such as crystals, wind chimes, etc., can be used for many different purposes. For example, a faceted crystal ball hung in a long narrow hallway to slow down the too-rapid flow of chi is a permanent solution to a design problem. A similar crystal hung in a marriage/romance power spot to attract a new romantic partner is an intention-driven enhancement.

Feng shui objects that you add to your home in order to correct a permanent design problem are generally permanent as well. Technically they are removable, but so long as the problem remains you will want to leave the feng shui cure in place as well. The only reason to remove such a cure would be to replace it with a different or larger one that you've decided you like better than the original.

Just because a cure is permanent, however, doesn't mean that you can forget about it. Remember that dirt and dust are forms of sha chi (negative energy). If your cures get dusty or dirty over time they will gradually become less effective. It's a good idea to go around your house once a year and inspect and clean all of your permanent feng shui cures. For example, if the red string you used to hang your feng shui crystals is looking frayed or faded, it's time to replace it. Water fountains should be drained and thoroughly cleaned from time to time. Good housekeeping is good feng shui, and this applies to your feng shui cures as well as to everything else is your home.

The other category of feng shui objects are those that you place in your home with the intention of activating and stimulating a specific aspect of your life. These kinds of feng shui changes should be re-evaluated periodically to ensure they are supporting your current life aspirations.

For example, let's say you hung a crystal in your bedroom six months ago, and are now in a relationship with a new romantic partner. Your issue is no longer meeting someone new; that's been accomplished. Perhaps you are content with this new relationship the way it is, and your attention has shifted to achieving greater financial prosperity so you and your beloved can buy a house together. Or perhaps you are still focused on relationship issues, but now you are thinking that it would be nice to make the transition to a marriage partnership.

This change in objective or intention is a sign that it's time to re-evaluate your crystal. If your new goal is to get married, you might decide to replace the crystal with an image that more specifically supports marriage, such as the Chinese "double-happiness" symbol, or a pair of mandarin ducks. Another option would be to temporarily take down the crystal, clean it, and then re-hang it and use the body-speech-mind empowerment process (called the "3 Secrets Reinforcement" in BTB practice) to focus the energy of the crystal on your new marriage goal. And if your goal is now to save enough money to buy a house, you might rehang the crystal in the wealth area of your bedroom to support your shared financial goal.

The objective of feng shui is to create, encourage and support positive changes in your life. As your life changes, your feng shui goals and strategies should change as well.

Feng Shui Q+A

(Most questions will have been edited for clarity and length, and any identifying details have been changed. Please note that due to the high volume of email I receive, it is no longer possible for me to respond to every question personally. I still welcome your questions, and if I cannot provide a personal response I will try to address your issue in a future Q+A column.)

Q: I live in a townhome, two floors, and my bathroom is on the 2nd floor immediately above my kitchen. I feel this is causing a great deal of conflicts and arguments with my spouse. How can I remedy this?

A: A bathroom over the kitchen can be very difficult energetically. The fire element associated with the stove is naturally in conflict with the water element associated with the bathroom. And, because the water energy in the bathroom is downward-moving (all those drains), it attacks the kitchen from above.

Water-fire clashes do tend to manifest as arguments and conflicts, and, because the kitchen/stove has a strong relationship to both health and prosperity, this situation deserves some attention. Here are some simple things you can do:

- A round (3"-6" diameter) mirror placed on the ceiling directly over the toilet bowl (use double-sided tape) will reflect the whirlpool and visually reverse the direction of water flow.

- Adding plants to the bathroom (or other forms of wood energy) will help to absorb excess water chi.

- Rocks or crystals placed in the corner of the bathroom will help add stability (too much water is destabilizing... imagine standing up in a canoe).

- A faceted crystal ball hung in the kitchen over the center of the stove, or where it is over your head as you cook at the stove, will help to deflect downward pressure.

- Place a picture of a divine intermediary, such as Quan Yin or Jesus, on the wall behind the stove. If you are not the spiritual type, you could use an image of you and your spouse together on a happy occasion.

Be sure to also check the marriage/relationship areas of your home for other forms of sha chi (negative energy) that may be contributing to disharmony in your relationship.
