How to Use Plants as Feng Shui Remedies

by Stephanie Roberts

Plants are among the most popular and frequently recommended feng shui remedies. Here are some effective ways you can use them to improve the feng shui of your home or office:

ADD VITALITY (living chi)
Bringing the natural world inside is one of the easiest ways to improve the overall vitality of your space, and a healthy house plant is a good way to do that. Our interior spaces often feature predominantly straight lines and patterns, and may have little or no natural light or exterior view. In addition to live plants, you can evoke the energy of nature by adding leafy patterns and branching lines to your interior space through your choice of fabrics and artwork.

ENCOURAGE LUCK
As representatives of the wood element, plants are appropriate additions to the Family, Wealth, and Fame areas. "Lucky bamboo" and jade plants especially make excellent good luck additions to these areas. To encourage greater prosperity, you can place nine coins in the bottom of a house plant (under the soil) in the Wealth area of your home, livingroom, kitchen, or office.

COUNTERACT SHA CHI
Plants can be placed in front of sharp angles and corners to help protect you from "secret arrows" of "sha chi" (harmful energy). In the workspace, if your desk is in the path of chi coming in the office door, a small potted plant placed on the far side of your desk, between you and the door, will act as a buffer. Tall plants with a strong vertical shape can help offset the oppressive chi of overhead beams or a slanted ceiling.

ABSORB EXCESSIVE WATER CHI
Plants can be used anywhere you have excessive water chi, especially in the bathroom or laundry room. Tall plants with a strong vertical shape are especially good for this purpose, as they help to counteract the draining effect of plumbing. Ivies and other trailing plants are not a good choice for the bathroom because they grow in a downward direction. Plants and shrubbery can also be used outdoors around a swimming pool in the Fame or Relationships position, to help balance the effect of water chi in those areas.

Living plants are best for any of these uses, so long as they are healthy. Houseplants do require care - some varieties more than others. Even a supposedly "idiot proof" plant such as a lucky bamboo will suffer in the wrong conditions. If you aren't sure which plants will do well in a sunny window, and which are appropriate for a shadier spot, consult your local garden center. Good quality artificial plants are an acceptable substitute, although not as powerful (they bring the appearance of vitality into your space, without providing actual living chi). For evoking the qualities of the wood element-as a symbol of the wealth area, for example--even an image or photograph of a plant or tree can be used.

Do-It-Yourself Space Clearing Kit
After moving into our new home a few months ago, my husband and I used Christan Hummel's excellent space clearing method to clear and bless the house. We followed the detailed, step-by-step instructions and guided meditations on the CD included in her "Do It Yourself Space Clearing Kit" and were very impressed with the results. We immediately felt a difference in the energy of the house and some "funky chi" areas in the yard have noticeably improved since performing Christan's ceremony. I highly recommend her "kit" (book and CD set) if you are interested in creating a positive energy shift in your own home. Click here for more details.

Christan has a 5-day "Creating Sacred Space" workshop coming up on Sept. 21-25 in Mission Bay, CA. Click here for more information on the program.

Feng Shui Q+A

Q+A Policy:
I welcome your questions by email, and am happy to clarify areas of confusion or help you understand how to apply contemporary feng shui to a specific situation. Please understand, however, that Q+A is not a substitute for a consultation or for learning the basics on your own. I do not review floor plans nor do I provide personalized advice based on kua numbers or compass directions.

If you are a new subscriber, I recommend reviewing past Q+A sections in the newsletter archives before emailing me, to get a sense of what kinds of questions are appropriate. You may even find that your question has already been answered.

Last but not least, please be aware that many others are also hoping for some of my time, and that asking multiple questions limits my ability to respond to everyone equitably. Due to the high volume of email I receive, I am often unable to respond promptly; please be patient while awaiting a reply.

Q: : "I bought a book about feng shui that says "never put a bed under a window." But in my bedroom that is the only available position for the bed. What should I do?"

A: This is one of my great complaints with many traditional feng shui books and methods. They are full of "don't do this" comments, with not much advice on what to do if you can't avoid that situation.

My policy is "never say 'never'." Feng shui should not be about wrestling your home into compliance with guidelines that are not relevant or applicable to your space. It's about making the best possible choices for you, within the limitations of your specific space. And in many cases it's just not possible to follow the "rules."

So, while it's less than ideal to have your bed under a window, your goal should be to find the best of the options that are available to you, even if some or all of them will place you under a window. Even if there is only one wall against which your bed can go, there may be several possible ways you could place the bed on that side of the room. You should consider:
~ Which position puts you in the best position relative to the doorway? You should be able to see the door, without being directly in the path of chi.
~ Which position provides the broadest view of the rest of the room?
~ Which position provides the best focal point (what you see when you are lying in bed, or the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning)?
~ Which position is best protected from any sources of sha chi?

Placing the bed under a window is considered a weak position, but if your bed has a solid headboard that will provide plenty of support and protection. You can also place crystals or geodes on the window sill or on the floor under the head of the bed to add stabilizing earth energy.

Other possible problems from being near the window might be light in the morning (or bright streetlights outside at night), or cold drafts in winter. A good window shade and some weather-stripping will take care of those.

The bottom line is that the best position for your bed is the one in which you will get the best night's rest. And that might be right under the window.

Clutter Clearing Tip

CLEARING CLUTTER WILL GET YOU 'UNSTUCK'

If you have been feeling "stuck" in some area of your life -- personal, professional, or financial -- clearing our your clutter will do a lot to shift the energy of your home or office. As a result, you are likely to discover that your life circumstances shift as well. You may find that your own perspective and needs shift once the clutter is gone.
